Contract Farming

Contract Farming

The Indian government gave official recognition to contract farming for the first time in 2003, by allowing farmers to contract directly with companies. Contract farming involves formal and informal agreements between farmers and buyers(firms) for the production and supply of agricultural products where both agree in advance at predetermined prices. It may be a marketing firm or a processing firm. Producers have to produce and give it to the contracting firm and the firm will purchase the product at this particular price. In some cases, the buyer also provides inputs like seeds, fertilizers, or technical or production methods depending on the deal.

Contract Farming is an effective way to promote production and marketing in agriculture. In contract farming, Companies gain access to the crop without owning land and maintaining that much land.

Kamdars Care is promoting contract farming in rural areas, particularly for crops like vegetables, cereals, spices, and non-timber forest products(NTFPs), including medicinal plants.

The Seed Promotion Program by Kamdars Care, in collaboration with reputed public and private seed agencies, aims to ensure the timely availability and adoption of high-quality seeds among smallholder farmers. By linking farmers with reliable seed sources, the program promotes improved crop productivity, varietal diversity, and sustainable farming systems.

Kamdars Care partners with agencies such as ICAR institutes, State Seed Corporations, National Seeds Corporation (NSC), private seed companies, and agri-research bodies to bring certified and climate-resilient seed varieties to the grassroots level.

Key Features of the Program:

  • Access to Quality Seeds: Farmers are provided with certified, high-yielding, and disease-resistant seeds for key crops like soybean, sweetcorn, vegetables, pulses, and oilseeds.
  • Seed Production by FPOs: Kamdars Care supports FPOs in producing and marketing certified seeds under technical guidance from partner agencies.
  •  Community Seed Banks: Local seed banks are established and maintained to ensure last-mile access to quality seeds during critical sowing periods.
  • Capacity Building: Training programs in seed production, storage, and treatment practices are conducted with support from seed experts and scientists.
  • Market and Institutional Linkages: Kamdars Care facilitates the branding and sale of farmer-produced seeds through partnerships with agri-input dealers and government procurement programs.

By strengthening local seed systems and encouraging farmer-led seed enterprises, this program contributes to seed security, income enhancement, and agricultural self-reliance at the grassroots.

NTFPs(Non-timber forest products) are useful foods, substances, materials, and commodities obtained from forests which means the products other than timber that are produced in forests, which include a wide variety of seeds, oils, medicinal plants, nuts, fruits, and other various fibers. Non-timber forest products have been used by human beings since time immemorial for a variety of purposes like food, fiber traditional medicine, domestic materials, agriculture amenities, and construction, and many of them are associated with cultures. In addition to the villagers living in the forest fringe areas, other rural communities also harvest NTFPs to earn cash by selling them into the market.

In recent years, interest has grown in using NTFPs as alternatives. The scope has also widened to include studies on valuation, marketing, and technological aspects of NTFP. Roughly estimated that more than 6000 NTFPs are harvested throughout the world from the wild land.

Kamdars Care has formed strategic partnerships with agricultural experts to offer training on best practices in crop cultivation, harvesting, and post-harvest management. Through this model, rural farmers gain assurance of a stable income by entering into agreements with buyers at pre-agreed prices. This minimizes market volatility, ensures guaranteed sales, and provides farmers with financial security.
